In the U.S., where standard outlets are of 120-volts, 240-volts outlets have a different configuration that makes them easily distinguishable. It will be larger, usually 4 ½ inches high and 4 ½ inches wide, with a single three-prong (Y shape) or a 4-prong (L on top) opening.  

There are different types of 240-volt outlets made for specific amperages and appliances. You can install one based on the application. Matching the right device to the right outlet is essential. Read through the manufacturer's manual of all applications, big or small, for information about the outlet it requires.
