Now that Spring is here, it’s time to do a few things to keep your electric bill in check and electrical appliances in good working order as the temperatures start to climb.

AC Checkup and filter change

To kick things off, Salt River Project is sponsoring a 20-point AC checkup for their customers for only $65.95. This is a limited time offer, lasting only until April 30, so hurry if you’d like to take advantage of this. You’ll have to provide a new filter, but they’ll change it, along with 19 other checks. SRP Certified Contractors will perform the work, and provide a detailed summary of their inspection. So, if you’re an SRP customer, you can get details here.  
Even if you aren’t an SRP customer, taking a moment to change that filter on a regular basis could lower your usage from 5-15%.

Clean and change your ceiling fan direction

During the winter, ceiling fans should run in a clockwise direction to pull cooler air upward and displace the warmer air up in your ceilings. In summer, your ceiling fans should turn in the counterclockwise direction. This will force air downward and the air motion will provide cooling relief, even though it doesn’t actually lower the temperature. So, turn on your fan and look up.  If the fan blades are already moving in a counterclockwise direction, you’re good to go. If not, there is a small switch on the side of the base. While the fan is off, switch it over to the counterclockwise mode.

Since you’re already up there, you may want to take a moment to spray some canned air around the motor clean out the dust and dirt (you may need a screwdriver to open the compartment that surrounds the motor). Then, using an appropriate cleaner and an old pillowcase, wipe off the blades, taking care not to get the motor, light bulbs, or any other electrical components wet in the process.

Outdoor electrical safety inspection

Many people enjoy getting out and enjoying the warmer temperatures before it gets too hot. If you have an electric lawn mower or other electrical appliances you’ll be using this summer, now is the time to get those mower blades sharpened and replace worn or damaged batteries and electrical cords. You’ll want to examine each one carefully every time you use it, as well, to make sure the insulation is sound, and that the casing and connectors are damage-free.

Also check any lights, fans, pool equipment or other outdoor electrical devices and make sure they are fully grounded, in good working order and damage free. Never use electrical items if there is a danger of coming in contact with water, and never touch them if you’re standing in water! It’s going to be a great summer, so you’ll want to be ready to enjoy it.
